THE PRACTICAL TEST

The DSA Practical driving test takes about 40 minutes to complete.During this time the examiner will try to ensure that you cover a wide variety of road and traffic conditions. These will vary from quiet low speed roads to busy high speed roads and town or city driving.

You will also have to undertake at least two set manoeuvres from the following list:-

1.Reverse around a corner -to the left -or to the right.

2.Turn in the road.

3.Reverse park behind a parked car.

4. Reverse into a parking bay.

You may also be asked to do an Emergency Stop.

During the the test, the examiner will tell you in good time which way to go.If you do mistakingly go the wrong way, don't panic, just make sure you keep driving correctly ( the examiner is testing your ability to drive not your ability to follow instructions!).

If at any time you do not understand what the examiner requires from you, don't hesitate to check- he/she wil be more than happy to repeat or clarify any instructions given.
While you are driving the examiner will note any driving faults on the driving test report form. The faults are catorgorised into minor, serious and dangerous and are recorded under the appropriate headings on the form.At the end of the test the examiner will total up all the faults he/she has recorded. If you commit 16 or more minor faults you will have failed the test.If you commit 1 or more, serious, or dangerous faults you will also have failed the test.

The DSA have recently introduced a new part to the practical test - the "Show me / Tell me"questions. These have been brought in so the candidates acquire some basic knowledge of maintenance and safety checks to enable them to keep their vehicles safe on the road. The candidates are asked 2 questions at the start of the test, if one or both are answered incorrectly then 1 minor fault will be recorded.

Example of what might be asked are- "show me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working" and" tell me how you would check if the brakes are working before starting a journey".

For a full list of the 12 combinations used in the test, log on to the DSA website at www.dsa.gov.uk click on car drivers, and then the link- practical tests,then- safety check questions, and finally- related items- safety questions for car drivers.

The current cost of the practical test is £56.50 for a weekday test or £67.00 for a Saturday or evening(after 4.30pm) test.
